Each day your child will bring home two or three books to read to you in the evening. Your child will be familiar with most of these books. By reading at home every day, your child will be able to develop more confidence as a reader. We become better readers by reading.
Try the following strategies:
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?
Try that again, but look at the first letter...the ending of the word...the middle of the word...
Re-read the sentence and get their mouths ready for the first letter, sometimes the word just pops out.
Remember, it is not necessary to practice all the reading startegies on every book, all the time. Please choose one or two things each day.
ALWAYS PRAISE YOUR CHILD FOR WHAT THEY DO WELL
Please record the book information on the home reading sheet and initial it daily. Please remind your child to treat all our books well.
All the books and reading folders should be returned daily.
Try the following strategies:
- Discuss the title.
- Do a book walk, let your child tell you about the story by looking at the pictures.
- Encourage your child to read so it sounds like talking.
- Read with expression.
- Read at a fast enough pace, so the meaning of the story is not lost, but do not rush.
- Take turns reading with your child to demonstrate how good fluent reading should sound.
- If your child makes an error, ask them appropriate questions:
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?
Try that again, but look at the first letter...the ending of the word...the middle of the word...
- If your child gets stuck on a word, ask them to look for what they know inside the word:
Re-read the sentence and get their mouths ready for the first letter, sometimes the word just pops out.
- If they say the wrong word, just say 'it could be...'. Often, they will make a correction on their own by going back and looking for more
information
