Popcorn words are words that 'pop up' everywhere. They are high frequency words that are repeated often in books and print. Learning to read and write these words help children become fluent readers and writers.
As new words are introduced, they are added to the 'Popcorn Words' wall display. Popcorn words consist of the 100 most frequently appearing words in childrens books. The goal is for all students to be able to read and write these words as soon as possible. Once a group of words has been mastered, more words are added. Reading and writing popcorn words are practiced on a regular basis.
HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD?
A list of popcorn words, word cards and a word bank book are in the child's homework folder. You can help your child by practicing these words every evening. Look closely at the words with your child and practice writing two or three words several times. Short practice times and playing word games will keep students interested. Word games are listed under the 'Learning Games' tab.
Read the words in the word bank book, as you add them in groups of five for your child to practice. As your child masters some words, review them occasionally and concentrate on learning new words.
